News:

Because Baki, broke his arm and cannot be at the Café to cook or to do renovations, the weekly poetry open mic at the Café has to stop for a few weeks (at least through the end of August) before the Café is in full running order again. This means that the upcoming features from August are either on hold or being moved to the remaining open dates for features at the Café, and... All I can do is wait for Baki at the Café to call me to let me know when the Café is in working order again so we can resume the weekly poetry open mic.

Although there will be no weekly live readings, weekly podcasts from past shows will still be uploaded to the Café’s weekly podcast, so everyone can still get weekly podcasts from the Café.

<sigh>

I’ll remove the Café listing up to Sept...

BAKI...Heal, Amigo!
Janet, keep us informed...

Quencher's Saloon

2401 N. Western Av

Hey ho, just so you know, the Daytonics are playing at Quencher's Saloon,  August 27.    You should block this out on your calendar RIGHT NOW (I'll wait) and make sure you've got the evening free.

This is the one you should come to, and bring all of your friends to.  For real.

This show is to benefit for our great friend and 'whip'-boardist,  the magnificent and immensely soulful Jonny Drexler.

This show is (probably) our last show of the year.

This weekend is one of the last weekends of summer 2010.

And the Daytonics will be smokin',  I guarantee.

We'll be playing at 10:30 and 11:30, so line up your babysitters early and tell em you'll be home late.

curated by Luis Humberto Valadez

Show description:

Tonight at Rec Room we draw a parallel between the process of writing through traumatic history/herstory and the form of psychotherapy know as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reproduction (EMDR). According to the theory posed by Francine Shapiro Ph.D, when a traumatic or distressing experience occurs it may overwhelm usual ways of coping and the memory of the event is inadequately processed. This memory is stored in an isolated memory network that, when accessed, may cause the individual to experience once more aspects of the original (traumatic) event. Many of us have seen our writing as a method of grounding ourselves firmly enough that we may gaze upon the treachery of past traumas with insight and, daresay, some form of resolution; of equal import, we find ourselves scrutinizing these events without the severe reaction(s) that proliferate without the foundation the practice of our discipline provides. In much the same way EMDR forges associations between our distressing memories and semantic memory indices thought to be independent of context and personal relevance, the writers featured this evening forge an association between history/herstory, ink and page, writer/reader and reader/listener that, beyond resolution, also promotes, at the very least, a modicum of detachment from these traumas.

Written by Mary Hamilton and selected by contest judge Dinty W. Moore, WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE is a collection of 13 flash fictions in which worlds are made, torn apart, drowned. The stories go small: a girl ties a ribbon on a present. The stories go big: a war is raged against the evening sky. The characters in these short short fictions find themselves in less-than-desirable circumstances. They know their plights. They acknowledge their situations. They give in. They overcome. They daydream a world where everything will be all right.

“The concise stories in this dynamic collection are bursting with moments of stark urgency and unexpected humor, with imagery that moves seamlessly from the bizarre to the oddly familiar, and situations that shift from the ludicrous to the undeniably sad,” writes Moore in his introduction to the book.

WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE features two-color letterpressed covers, printed by hand on a Vandercook press at The Museum of Printing in North Andover, Massachusetts. The chapbook has been produced in a limited run of just 300 copies, so be sure to get yours now! here: http://www.rosemetalpress.com/Catalog/whatweR.html

The Horseshoe

Inspired by round-robin nights held regularly in Nashville, Los Angeles and New York, Chicago-based singer-songwriter Larry O. Dean started Folk You! in December 2001. Weary of standard acoustic showcases, Dean wanted something more intimate and at the same time, more varied.

Held the third Friday of every month, Folk You! presents a quartet of performers taking the stage simultaneously with naught but their guitars and songs. Interaction is encouraged but there is no script; performers may play and let the songs speak for themselves, or talk about how they came to write them. Backing is also provided on occasion by violist, Derek Walvoord.

Who performs at Folk You!? Larry hosts and plays, joined by three others. The one throughline is the night must comprise songs that can be played nakedly and stand up alone. Obviously performers well-versed in folk-type solo acoustic situations are welcome, but Dean also encourages songwriters who tend to front electric combos to step out from their role as one of the band and let the songs be heard as they were written.

The next Poetry Bomb is April 10, 2011

At least once a year, The Poetry Bomb aims to fill as many public locations as humanly possible with performances of poetry all at the exact same time.
The Poetry Bomb is a random Act of poetry.  It takes place wherever you see fit.  All we specify is a date and time.  If you wish to be involved in more organized actions of Poetry Bombing or if you just wish to notify us of your participation, willingness, to help us out, contact us at poetrybomb@gmail.com
